5xxx alloys

Description

5xxx aluminum alloys are recycled aluminium. The major alloying element in 5xxx aluminum alloys is magnesium, with trace amounts of 5.6% of manganese in certain alloys. Alloys, containing more than 3.5% of magnesium, are susceptible to stress corrosion at elevated temperatures. Manganese (Mg), chromium (Cr), titanium (Ti), vanadium (V), beryllium (Be) and gallium (Ga) may be added to the alloys of 5xxx series as minor alloying elements. 5xxx alloys are strain-hardenable, readily weldable, and resist corrosion exceptionally well, especially in marine environments. 

Popular applications: 5xxx alloys are popularly used for high strength foil, dump track bodies, petrol tanks, pressure cryogenic vessels, marine structures and fittings, automotive trim and architectural components. Other widely applications of 5xxx alloys include boat hulls, and gangplanks.
